A New Collection: Designing the First Piece, PART IV

Constraint-less, I have now explored many many different possibilities for this earring design. The size of the petals in length, the number of petals, their width, the shape, the attachment, the arrangement, the shape- flat or curved, soft or stark... the same or different.

What I have created now is a deadline. I will launch the new collection from our new shop in Chicago's Roscoe Village in April of 2020.

The collection is called "Groundbreaking- Florals for Spring"    ...with apologies to the Devil Wears Prada....

I am often asked how I come up with my ideas.  If I am working with a client on a custom piece, then the process is very collaborative. The final design springs from the client's goal, such as designing a wedding band, the theme,  and their  inspiration. The theme might be floral, or geometric, modern or traditional in style. The inspiration is often personal. A bouquet of sunflowers, Lake Michigan, the neoclassical columns found inside The Field Museum, and a Celtic knot have all been great starting points for creating a timeless, personal designs.

After I decided to feature the beautiful oval spessartite garnet in the First Piece pendant, I moved on to procuring gemstones for the first three pairs of earrings.  I settled on a very unusual pair of 9mm round cranberry red tourmalines. I have not seen this color before, it has a warmth and depth of color I thought would be especially nice with the 18K yellow gold and dark wood inlay.

This sketch depicts a large pendant in 18k gold with inlaid American walnut, orange spessartite garnet,  rubellites and peridot. The “First Piece” defines a collection. It’s the couture of a series, a seed from which smaller simpler pieces will grow.
